Ubuntu
Linux is currently one of the most popular Linux distributions for its
simplicity and ease of use. This is ideal for new Linux users or for
those wanting to switch from Windows or Mac OS. The CD can either be run
in Live CD mode (runs directly from CD) or it can be installed onto
your hard drive (even a USB
Flash Memory
Drive). Once installed,
additional applications can be downloaded and installed easily.
Ubuntu
is a community developed, Debian Linux-based operating system that is
perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the
applications you need - a web browser, email, presentation, document
and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more.
Ubuntu
Linux uses the GNOME Desktop and Kubuntu uses the KDE Desktop.
Xubuntu
is an official derivative of Ubuntu using the Xfce desktop environment.
It is intended for users with less-powerful computers, or those that
require a highly efficient desktop environment on faster systems.
Xubuntu features primarily GNOME applications. Further details can be
found on the Ubuntu website.
Edubuntu
- for young people. This distribution is aimed at classroom use and
includes many school-related applications installed by default,
including TuxPaint, TuxMath, and TuxTyping, among others. More details can be found on the Edubuntu website.
Ubuntu
Netbook Edition is Ubuntu optimised specifically for use on
Netbook computers running the Intel® Atom™ processor with at least 512
MB memory and at least 4 GB storage (SSD or hard drive). Ubuntu
Netbook Edition is supplied on a single CD containing the files and
instructions needed for you to install onto a USB flash memory drive
(which can then be installed to your Netbook via the USB flash drive) which
must be at least 1 GB in size (USB drive not included!). More details can be found on the
Ubuntu website here.
Supported Netbook models can be found here.
The Apple Mac version runs on PPC processors (G3, G4, G5, including
iBooks and PowerBooks) and not
the new Intel Macs. Full details can be found on the Ubuntu website.

The alternate CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a
text-based installer.
This is the best option for those using an external CD/DVD drive
during installation or if
you are unable to run or install in the Live CD mode.

Desktop versions until 2011.

existing Ubuntu installation.
**** Ubuntu Netbook Edition is supplied on a CD as an image file
which must be installed onto a USB flash memory drive of at least 1GB in
size. Once installed on the USB drive it can be run and tested from the
